Cairn Wood Round Up

Peter races in to the finish

The Junior Squad, and a lot of adults, turned up to Cairn Wood for some O trainining. This started with a 2 or 3 Km time trail run, a lot of which was up hill! After this the lesson focused in on 'map simplification'. Athletes were given a map with some of the detail removed, that is simplified. They had to use handrails, attack points and catching features to navigate to the control.

The last part of the event was a memory test. Juniors took part first in a memory star course. They got time to read the route to a control site and then setting off with out the map they had to locate the control before returning to the start and then trying a new control.

The final challenge was to undertake an entire loop of 6 or 7 controls using map memory. They had to read the first leg on the map, memorise it and then set off to find the control. At each control they would find a map of the next section of the course.
