2013 Junior Incentive Scheme Results

The Junior Incentive Scheme results for 2103 have been run through our calculating machine and after several days of hard work the results are now available on the Incentive Scheme page.  Well done to everyone who qualified for an award in 2013. You all did very well. Certificates will be issued at the club AGM in early 2014. A big thank you goes to Geoffrey C, manager of the calculating machine, without whom we would not have any results collated.

Dec Junior Training

Getting ready for the Tempo

Hunting for chocolates

Start them young

Is that a selfie?

Man on a mission - a chocolate one!
There have been a couple of events this December for our juniors to enjoy. First was a chance to run the World Police and Fire Games courses from Aug.  Not as warm nor as many nettles in December but our juniors put in a fantastic run. The would have beat most of the WPFG competitors hands down!! There was also a chance to take part in the TempO and a short score course. The better you did the more time you were allocated in the winners box. The more time in the box the more chocolates you got to pick up, even if you were running backwards, could only use one hand and had to wear an adults glove!!.

On the 14 Dec then we had a great session in Hillsborough Forest Park with Jon Musgrave from MAROC. Very windy and a bit wet but we all got a lot from the sessions. It was great to be able to practice basic skills without the pressure of time and also to get some coaching on group and one to one basis.

Preparing for the mental control description challenge

Who is that Orienteer?

About to set off

The finish!!

Expert Training 14 Dec Hillsborough with Jon Musgrave

Calling all juniors (and their parents). There is a fantastic opportunity to get some expert O training from Jon Musgrave of MAROC on the 14 Dec at Hillsborough Forest Park.

This is a real unique opportunity organised by the NIOA junior lead, Allan Bogle so don't miss out. Jon is a very experienced orienteer and coach and this promises to be a fantastic chance to learn from a real O star. He was GB's first ever medalist in the World Champs (silver in Relay 1993) and then went on to be one of GBs leading coaches throughout the 90s & 00s. He is also one of the countries leading map makers - he mapped Magilligan Sand dunes for all of you that have raced there.

If you intend to take part you need to let me know at my email address so that the necessary maps can be printed.

There will be Junior Training at Meelmore during the NI OC. Visit the training page for more details. Please remember to email me to say you are coming.

Slieve Garron Round Up

Juniors took part in training on attack points at Slieve Garrron on the 5 Oct. The aim of the game was to find a small training kite, hidden on a feature, by locating a more obvious attack point marked on the map with a cross and on the ground with red and white tape. All juniors managed to avoid getting eaten by a goat as well!!

Junior Home Internationals 2013

The Junior Home International is a competition held between teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales every year, with the location cycling between the four countries. This year, the competetion was in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales, with the individual race on Mynedd Llangatwg and the relay race on Clydach terrace. LVO was well represented with Eoghan Knight(M14), Jill Stephens (W16), Paul Pruzina (M16), James Millar (M16) and Harry Millar (M18) all running for Ireland.
The Individual race area was open mountainside, with very gradual contours so not much to navigate by if you got lost, making relocation very difficult. The map of the area with the M16 course marked is below:

The Relay was again open mountainside, but with much more intricate contour detail - quite like sand dunes, except on a mountain. Very fast running and difficlut navigation made this a very fast race, so even a small mistake cost a lot. The map is below:

The JHIs are a great experience and offer really good competetion that really improves your orienteering by letting you compete on new areas against new people, and LVO juniors should try to aim to be selected for this sort of competition, especially those moving up to M/W14 next year, as it is their first year eligible for selection. Just look at these pictures of us having fun to inspire you...

A Testing 2 Hours

Waiting for a bus - or the compass test
On the 15 Sep the Junior Squad took part in a training session with a twist in Hillsborough Forest Park. Thankfully the rain had stopped and it was a dry event.  The aim of the day was to get round a course of about 2 km and on the way round complete four stands. These stands covered compass use, map symbols, pacing and control descriptions.

The course wasn't easy with a section of control picking in the forest that required all the skills taught before the summer. Some people did very well whilst other found it a bit more challenging. Everyone learnt a little bit more about the sport and their own capabilities.

He's behind you!!!
It's round here somewhere
I think it's messed up his hair

A small line of ants carrying playing cards cross the map symbol test
"Spare a penny for the birds kind sir"
Happy Days
Jumping for Joy - It's all over

"Yes I saw a little pixie right here. He was just this height"

And for the Results!!

In all 12 juniors took part. Everyone did very well to get round. The timings for the course have been combined with the scores from the stands in our purpose built results generating computer to produce an adjusted time (eg time added on for score points lost). Its been very technical work but in the end the machine has told us the following:

Joint First Place: Matthew Smith and Sophie Pruzina (adjusted time of 26.5 minutes).
Second Place: Andrew Elwood (adjusted time of 27.5 minutes).
Third Place: Peter Reed (adjusted time of 32 minutes).

The adjusted time for everyone else was as follows:

Luke Collins 33.5 minutes
Jack O'Dwyer Henry - 33.5 minutes
Tom Earnshaw 34 minutes
Clare Robinson 35 minutes
Ellen Smith 39.5 minutes
Ben Jonston 41 minutes
Donovan Draper 42 minutes
Jamie Wilson 46 minutes

Some people had fast times but not so great scores at the tests. This ended up costing a lot of places in adjusted times. It would be a good idea to brush up on pacing and map symbols for a few people. So if that is you and you don't know what to do just ask me and I will help.

See you all at the next event.

Hillsborough Park - Junior Training 15 Sep

Looks like we have enough people now to run the training at Hillsborough Park on the 15 Sep. It will be a great day so make sure not to miss it. We will be running a course with a difference. There will be a timed event with a series of special control stands on the way round covering (1) pacing, (2) map symbols, (3) control descriptions and (4) compass work.  Some juniors have confirmed already. Come along and have a go but make sure you let me know.

World Police and Fire Games

A team of Juniors helped to run the World Police and Fire Games Middle Distance race at Barnett's Demesne on the 8 Aug. It was a great day and the Juniors, Rachel, Andrew and Luke, were a great help in setting up and running the starts.

And there's more.....

Wednesday in Scotland on the Six Day was a rest day. Our team made the most of it as you can see. Buried in sand and, if you look very hard, dolphin spotting.

Thursday was back to O. Rachel has a great run coming 3rd out of 36 in the W12A - way to go girl. Ben and Luke both had improved performances but Peter had a mp - it happens to us all and I'm sure the remainder of his run was great. On Friday the move was to RAF Kinloss, giving Luke and Dad the chance to play at Top Gun (ask your mum or dad). The weather has been great for everyone and they even made it onto the big screen - fame at last.

More for Scotland 2013

The Scottish Six Day is a great way to meet people of your age, including those from other nations - there are 52 runners in M10 alone for example.

Luke has struck up a chat with a Spanish boy in his age category and met up with a friend from last year's Welsh Creoso event. Our team has had a demonstration of free running from the lads from Moray Orienteers as well. How cool is that.

On the orienteering front LVO Juniors have has had a steady performance. On day 2 Rachel was doing really well on the 5th control (leading the field) but a slight misreading of the control numbers meant she slipped back. I've done it myself and it is an easy error to make so well done to her for sorting it out and carrying on.  Luke has made steady improvements and finished in the top half of his category on Day 3 and Ben has had a splendid competition on M10B, finishing it on his own at age 7. Finally Peter is is a very respectable 4th position after Day 3on the M14B. Today was a day off for the team

Monday 29 July 2013

The Scottish Six Day orienteering event is currently underway and there are four under 14 juniors from LVO there. This event is held every two years and is a top notch competition. In 2015 it will run alongside the World Championships so that is something for you all to aim for.

There are about 4000 runners taking part from all over the world and with 30 runners or more in each class it is hard to do really well. Ben, Peter, Rachel and Luke are our LVO juniors doing the best they can and putting all their recent training and experience to the test at the event. Ben and Peter ran their first races today in an international competition so well done to them. Luke and Rachel put in sound efforts on a tough opening day in the Scots Pine forest and amongst sand dunes. There is plenty more orienteering yet to be done and we will try to keep you all posted. Good luck team LVO!!!
